Motherboard VRM Check

If you buy the cheapest board that fits, how likely is it to cost you clock speed?

Share of budget boards that throttle a Core i7

In the under $120 band, 100 % of Intel boards in this database throttle a Core i7-class processor, against 0 % in the $400 and up band — the difference is almost entirely power-stage count and heatsink mass, and none of it is visible on a compatibility list.

Method

Every LGA1700 and LGA1851 board is evaluated against the Core i7 and Core Ultra 7 K-series parts in the catalogue, which hold 230–245 W indefinitely on a board with unlimited tau. A board counts as throttling if the model returns a severe verdict for any of them. Price bands use our typical retail estimate, not a live price.

Sample size: 144 evaluations across 120 processors and 80 motherboards. Model constants are published on the methodology page.
