Power delivery on AM5
The heaviest AM5 processor here is the AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D at 225 W sustained, which is the number every board on this page is measured against. A board's socket tells you the chip will fit; it says nothing about whether the power stages behind that socket can feed it for ten minutes without heating up.
The useful question on AM5 is not which chipset to buy but how many Vcore power stages the specific board has and how big its heatsinks are. Two boards on the same chipset, twenty dollars apart, routinely differ by a factor of two in sustained core current, and that difference is what decides whether your processor holds its clocks.
AM5 chipsets
- X870E2024 · PCIe 5.0 · CPU OCX870E is AMD's top AM5 chipset: two chipset dies for maximum port count, mandatory USB4, PCIe 5.0 to both the graphics slot and the primary M.2, and firmware that ships Zen 5 ready.
- X8702024 · PCIe 5.0 · CPU OCX870 is the single-die version of AMD's 800-series flagship: USB4 and PCIe 5.0 graphics are still mandatory, with fewer downstream lanes than X870E.
- X670E2022 · PCIe 5.0 · CPU OCX670E was the launch enthusiast chipset for AM5, with two chipset dies, PCIe 5.0 to the graphics slot and to at least one M.2, and the largest VRMs of the generation on its flagship boards.
- B8502025 · PCIe 4.0 or 5.0 · CPU OCB850 is the 2025 mainstream AM5 chipset: CPU overclocking allowed, PCIe 5.0 to the primary M.2 required, PCIe 5.0 to the graphics slot optional, and Zen 5 support out of the box.
- B650E2022 · PCIe 5.0 · CPU OCB650E is B650 with PCIe 5.0 mandated for both the graphics slot and the primary M.2 slot, which makes it the cheapest route to a full Gen 5 AM5 system.
- B6502022 · PCIe 4.0 · CPU OCB650 is the chipset most AM5 systems are built on: CPU overclocking and EXPO memory profiles are both allowed, the graphics slot runs at PCIe 4.0, and boards exist from under $120 to over $250.
- A6202023 · PCIe 4.0 · no CPU OCA620 is AMD's entry AM5 chipset: no CPU overclocking, PCIe 4.0 throughout, and the smallest VRMs on the platform, aimed at processors in the 65 W class.
